Norwegian Yankee : Knute Nelson and the failure of American politics, 1860-1923. This volume was the first Scandinavian-American politician to attain national prominence, as a Republican congressman, governor of Minnesota, and U.S. senator. The first 70 pages concern Nelson's birth in Norway, immigration to the U.S., residing in Koshkonong, Wisconsin and attending the Albion Academy, serving in the Civil War in the 4th Wisconsin Infantry, reading law in Madison, and serving two terms in the Wisconsin Assembly. |
