Summary |
Our Roll of Honor or Dane County in the Civil War is a listing by town, village, and city of the soldiers who were killed or died from wounds or disease while in the service from 1861 to 1866, inclusive, with the cause and place of death, where known. Where not otherwise stated, death was from disease. It is also an appeal by the Soldiers' Memorial Association to raise funds to build a Memorial Hall in memory of the Civil War soldiers and as a meeting place for veterans organizations such as the Sons of Union Veterans and its Women's Auxiliary, the Daughters of Union Veterans, the Women's Relief Corps 37 (Lucius Fairchild), the Harnden Camp, the Ladies of The Grand Army, the Daughters of the Grand Army, and the Navy Mothers.. The cover has an illustration drawn by Vernon J. Price, Architect, of a proposed building. In 1904 the Association bought an 1858 building located at 118 Monona Ave. (Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.). In 1937 the Association changed its name to the GAR Memorial Association. The building was torn down in 1973 but the building stones were saved for someone who wants to reconstruct the facade. |
