"City of Madison" World War II Bomber Materials consists of 1 archival (polyester) sleeve containing: 1 black and white, approx. 8" x 10" photograph of a World War II B-29 crew in front of the "City of Madison" bomber Letter and envelope from James J. Brown, 1st Lt., Air Corps, 30th Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombardment Group, to the Mayor of Madison, Wisconsin. The date on the postmark is July 30, 1945. Opening line of the letter reads, "We are a B-29 crew, stationed on Guam, in the Marianas Islands, and we feel that you would be interested in knowing that we have named our plane 'City of Madison'." Newsclip from the "Wisconsin State Journal," February 28, 1988, about the above photo Typed piece of paper identifying the above photo saying that it was taken on Guam and presented by the crew to the city of Madison in recognition of hospitalities extended. Excerpts from the above letter follow, along with the names of the crew members. |
