Scope & Content Dane County Cooperative Dairy Herd Improvement Association Records document the business operations of a countywide cooperative dairy group established to promote efficiency on dairy farms by providing a cattle breeding and milk testing service for member farms. The records consist of meeting minutes, financial records, newsletters, and annual meeting programs. The minutes are complete for the years 1945-1961, and cover the group's organizational meeting when by-laws were adopted. The financial records are incomplete, but include audit reports and balance sheets. The newsletters contain announcements of new members, officer lists, details on cattle sales, upcoming group events, lists of milk production averages for each member farmer, and lists of member cows producing the highest amounts of butterfat per herd. There are also several newsletters from the Iowa-Dane County Cooperative Dairy Herd Improvement Association, which was started by a former Dane County Cooperative Dairy Herd Improvement Association fieldman named Wilbur Walker. Also included in the collection are annual reports from the group's parent organization, the Wisconsin Dairy Herd Improvement Association (1962-1970), which largely consist of aggregate data on herd perfomance from all of the county organizations around Wisconsin. There are also several non-official Dairy Herd Improvement Association publications, including two Wisconsin Holstein Association Membership Directories, Wisconsin Dairy Facts (1964), Wisconsin Special Bulletin No. 78: Livestock, Dairy, Poultry (1955-61), and the Tri-County Black & White Show (1971, 1977, 1980-83, 1986, 1988).
Admin/Biographical History Although the Dane County chapter was not formally organized until 1945, the Wisconsin Dairy Herd Improvement Association program began in 1925 by the University of Wisconsin College of Agriculture and County Extension program as part of a broader effort across the United States started by the American Dairy Science Association and the United States Department of Agriculture to involve dairymen in policy formation, and in the educational possibilities of record keeping programs on farms. Uniform recordkeeping across the states was instrumental in setting up the national sire proving program in 1935, which in turn led to the development of the national artifical breeding program. In the 1950s, several agricultural colleges and the U.S. Department of Agriculture began developing systems for computing Dairy Herd Improvement Association records on electronic data processing machines. In Wisconsin, considerable research was conducted prior to a demonstration phase which began in 1957. The formation of Agricultural Records Cooperative in 1959 provided the means by which the Dairy Herd Improvement Association's machine record service was made available to all Wisconsin dairy farmers. The development of electronic recordkeeping procedures aided farmers in keeping accurate milk production and management records, and ultimately improved the production and profitability of dairy farming all around the country.
