Title Dane County Extension Homemakers records
Dates of Creation 1940-2007
Physical Description 3 full size archives boxes, 10 flat boxes
Scope & Content Records, 1940-2007, of the Dane County Extension Homemakers, an organization which coordinated activities of local homemakers clubs and advised the county's home agent. Clubs were concerned with improving homemaking, family living, and civic life. Clubs provided both leadership training and a social outlet for women.

Further details:

The records document the activities of the Dane County Extension Homemakers and its predecessors, concerned with improving homemaking, family living, and civic life. Included are histories of the organization, minutes, programs from meetings and special events, newsletters, news clippings, photographs, and items such as fair ribbons, badges, and other memorabilia.

The bulk of the collection is scrapbooks containing all the types of records noted above. The scrapbooks date 1940-2006 and are in fragile condition with many of the items taped into them coming loose. One scrapbook is from the Motivated Movers of Fitchburg homemakers group.

Two additional boxes contain other records of the organization: manuals and handbooks, a constitution and bylaws, the newsletter "HCE Happenings," officer and membership lists, annual program books, more photographs, programs and records from the annual spring banquets when officers were installed, reports and programs from fall festivals, a gavel and pins, and histories. Mimeo items document Leadership Training Programs sponsored by UW Extension and Dane County. One or two members from each club were selected to attend and then return to home clubs to share the lessons. This system replaced previous practices of Extension officers visiting centers and offering training to several clubs at a time.

Also included in Box 12 are news clips and photos from the Tri-Ville Homemakers of Brooklyn.
Admin/Biographical History The group was founded in 1940 so that county residents could get services from the University of Wisconsin Home Economics Extension. Also at that time the Dane County government established a position for a home agent. The group was known first as the Dane County Homemakers Club, later as the Dane County Home Demonstration Council, and the Dane County Extension Homemakers Council. It disbanded effective December 31, 2006.

The county organization coordinated activities of local homemakers clubs within the county and advised the county's home agent. A community could have more than one club, the size of each somewhat determined by how many women a member's home could accommodate. The Dane County Homemakers belonged to the Southwest Region which held twice yearly District meetings.
