Dates of Creation 1943-1944.
Physical Description 1 half size archives box.
Language of Material English
Scope & Content The Proposed Purchase of Madison Gas & Electric Company by the City of Madison Scrapbook consists entirely of clippings from the "Wisconsin State Journal" and the "Capital Times" newspapers regarding the proposed city purchase of the utility in 1943-1944. The clippings document the contentious debate which had the editors of the "Capital Times," including William Evjue, championing the cause of municipal ownership, with the editors of the "Wisconsin State Journal" favoring the continuation of private ownership. Included in the articles are editorials, letters to the editor, general news reports on the issue, and a large advertisement by the Madison Citizens and Taxpayers Committee urging citizens to vote no to the municipal purchase referendum. The articles echo similar concerns repeated by both sides, with proponents of purchase feeling that the Madison Gas and Electric Company was a monopoly that was taking advantage of residents, and with detractors fearing that municipal ownership of utilities would lead to true socialism. Coverage ends shortly after the 11 million dollar referendum was defeated by a 2-1 margin in April 1944. The scrapbook's compiler is unknown.
