Scope & Content The Beatrice Olivia Grinde Knudtson Music Collection consists primarily of printed sheet music published between 1899 and 1945. While popular music is the most heavily represented genre in the collection, there are also folk and traditional songs published in modern arrangements for group performances as well. Among the popular music are songs composed by Irving Berlin, Arthur Freed, Howard Johnson, Mort Dixon, and songs featured in such Hollywood films as "The Cocoanuts," "Ramona," "Andy Hardy Meets Debutante," "Too Young to Know," "The Pagan," and "Untamed." In addition to the sheet music, there are also several song booklets, including "Word of Life Melodies No. 2," "Christmas in Song," "The Golden Books of Favorite Songs," "Appendix to Practical Harmony," and a small English-Norwegian booklet of Christmas carols, published and distributed by the Norwegian America Line. Of particular note is an untitled and undated book of Nowegian songs, which includes original compositions and arranged folksongs by noteworthy composers Edvard Greig, Halfdan Kjerulf, and others. The unpublished portion of the collection is comprised of byproducts from musical events in which Knudtson was involved, including a 1961 DeForest (Wis.) High School recital program, recital notes, some song lists, and some undated prepared remarks for a historical fashion show held at a DeForest area Lutheran Church. The sheet music for the songs played during the fashion show are kept in date order in their own folder in the collection.
